Good news! I just received a call from Alexander’s Audiologist reporting that Cochlear’s newest version of the cochlear implant was just approved by the FDA and Alexander will be activated with the Nucleus 5 in October. It has new bells and whistles, but most of all it is thinner than the previous versions. They have designed the batteries to lay vertically instead of horizontally and it only requires 2 disposable batteries instead of 3 batteries. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
I am bummed that he will not have the new internal piece since he had surgery 2 weeks ago. Luckily the Freedom is compatible with the Nucleus 5. Although the only difference between their internal pieces is the new one is thinner. It would have made a little difference, but what is done is done.
Here’s to the Nucleus 5!
